I used to think a cut was something you lose. Now I think the cut is the film.

The monitors are off. She has turned the room lights down to the level of a lamp and sits with her hands flat on the desk, as if the table might move. A cup of tea is going cold at the edge of the keyboard, and she does not apologise for it.

Before

Before

What do people assume about you that you have stopped correcting?

What I cannot explain

What I cannot explain

What can you still not explain properly?

Why I stayed. I can tell you what I cut, but I have never been able to tell anyone why I stayed.

What we saw

Three times she described herself by what she had taken out, while the people who hire her describe her by what she added. A reputation is usually built on the visible half of the work, and hers sits in the other half. That gap is where the work is, because she does not need to be louder. People need to be shown the cut.

Why I stayed. I can tell you what I cut, and I cannot tell you why I stayed.

Why I stayed. I can tell you what I cut, and I cannot tell you why I stayed.
